I remember this one, too. I absolutely loved your analogy here, and the final line in particular is very powerful, as is this one: With gentle claws, he picked through the remains of his empty heart.
Really moving stuff. Of course, I'm brightened by the fact that I know how it ends, but he still has another year after this was written; it had to have been hard. Not many can really capture what he must have been going through during that time, but I think you did it beautifully here. Awesome work.
